Problem Description

i got p090 trouble code and at idle i smeling petrol and consuption is very high at normal speed it seems to work fine sometimes the erors code delete itself snd t slow speeds is comenig back

Diagnosis

The P0090 code indicates an issue with the fuel pressure regulator control circuit, which is crucial for managing the fuel supply to the engine. When this code is present, it often results in symptoms such as an unusual smell of petrol, especially at idle, and increased fuel consumption. The fact that the vehicle appears to operate normally at higher speeds but exhibits problems at idle and low speeds suggests that the fuel pressure regulator or its control circuit is intermittently failing or not operating within the manufacturer's specified parameters. This intermittent nature could explain why the error code sometimes clears itself, as the condition may temporarily improve or fall below the threshold for setting the code.

The likely root cause is a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator or an issue within its control circuit, such as damaged wiring or poor connections. The fuel pressure regulator's role is to maintain the correct fuel pressure to the engine. When it fails, it can either cause too much or too little fuel to be delivered to the engine, leading to inefficiency, increased emissions, and the smell of fuel due to unburnt petrol. If not addressed, this issue can lead to more significant engine problems, including damaged catalytic converters, poor performance, and potentially even engine failure due to improper fuel-to-air ratios causing internal damage.

Potential Solutions

Replace Fuel Pressure Regulator

Symptoms:
  • •P0090 trouble code
  • •Unusual smell of petrol at idle
  • •Increased fuel consumption
Steps to Fix:
  1. 1.Disconnect the battery to ensure safety
  2. 2.Locate the fuel pressure regulator, usually near the fuel rail
  3. 3.Remove the vacuum line and fuel lines from the regulator, taking care to relieve fuel system pressure first
  4. 4.Unbolt the regulator from the fuel rail and replace it with a new one
  5. 5.Reconnect the vacuum and fuel lines, and then reconnect the battery
  6. 6.Clear the P0090 code using an OBD-II scanner and test drive the vehicle to ensure the issue is resolved
Cost:Estimated cost range $150-$300, including parts and labor
Difficulty:Moderate

Inspect and Repair Wiring/Connections

Symptoms:
  • •Intermittent P0090 code
  • •Fluctuating idle
  • •Occasional petrol smell at low speeds
Steps to Fix:
  1. 1.Inspect the wiring and connectors leading to the fuel pressure regulator for signs of damage or corrosion
  2. 2.Repair or replace any damaged wiring or connectors
  3. 3.Use an electrical contact cleaner to clean all related connectors
  4. 4.Reassemble and reconnect all components
  5. 5.Clear the diagnostic trouble codes with an OBD-II scanner and perform a test drive to ensure the repair has addressed the issue
Cost:Estimated cost range $50-$200, depending on the extent of the wiring repairs needed
Difficulty:Moderate
